  • Verified concern. Check engine light is on. Engine cranks over for an excessive amount of time before starting. Engine sounds like something is grinding inside on start up. Engine is idling very rough. 10 fault codes are stored in the engine control module, P115C, P0128, P0300, P0304, P0012, P0302, P0301, P0303, P000A, and P1497. Checked engine oil level. Engine oil is not reading on the dipstick. Engine oil level is low. Removed intake VANOS solenoid. Found the intake VANOS solenoid is very dirty and has metal shavings all over the screens. Recommend to start by adding engine oil to correct the engine oil level. Also recommend to clean and re install the intake VANOS solenoid, then re evaluate.
  • Cleaned and re installed intake VANOS solenoid. Topped off engine oil level and verified engine oil level is correct. Cleared fault codes in engine control module. On initial start up after cleaning intake VANOS solenoid and adding engine oil, the engine still sounded very rough. But after that initial start the engine sounds normal. Let vehicle sit overnight. Road tested. Check engine light did not come back on. Fault codes did not re appear. Advised customer that due to the metal shavings in the engine we would recommend a tear down inspection to determine the source of the metal shavings. Customer declined a tear down inspection at this time. No additional repairs performed at this time. Advised customer to check engine oil level on a regular basis. Advised customer that the check engine light will probably come back on at some point.
